Heritage

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is proactively enhancing the Cyfarthfa Heritage Area through regenerating and conserving three strategic heritage projects which include:

• The Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People Scheme at Cyfarthfa Park
• The restoration and enhancement of the Cyfarthfa Leat and Old Gurnos Tramway
• Re-use and restoration of Cyfarthfa Castle

To ensure the ongoing success of this areas’ regeneration there is collaborative partnership working, support from funders, specialist project teams and as importantly the continuous support from the local community and volunteers. These three schemes will undoubtedly improve the attraction offering and visitor experience. Equally important is to develop site of the Cyfarthfa Ironworks which will be progressed in the coming future.

The long term plan is to develop Cyfarthfa Heritage Area as:

• A premier visitor destination for South Wales
• A place of inspiration linking Merthyr Tydfil’s history and its present, its role in the industrial revolution and its environment
• A gateway between Merthyr Tydfil’s industrial heritage and the Brecon Beacons
• A place for recreation and education for residents and visitors, with full community involvement through participation, volunteering and training
